Pitradev arranges Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi for pets — dogs, cats, and other beloved animal companions. The ceremony follows the same process as for human ashes, with the sankalp taken in the name of the pet and "Amukh Gotra" chanted in place of the family gotra. Three packages available: ₹2,000 (basic visarjan), ₹3,500 (with pind daan), and ₹5,000 (with pind daan and tarpan). Priest, material, and boat included.
For millions of families across India and around the world, a dog or a cat is not merely an animal in the house. It is a member of the family. It has slept on the same bed, shared the same meals, greeted the family at the door every evening, and been a source of unconditional love for 10, 12, or even 15 years.
When that companion passes away, the grief is real. It is not less than the grief felt for a human family member — it is simply different. And for families who follow the Hindu tradition, a question naturally arises: can we give our pet the same sacred farewell that we would give to a loved one? Can the ashes of our dog or cat be immersed in the holy Ganga at Kashi, with the same vidhi and the same reverence?
The answer is yes. Pitradev arranges Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi for pets, following the same sacred process that is followed for human ashes — because in the Hindu tradition, every atma deserves dignity, regardless of the body it inhabited.
The Bhagavad Gita teaches that the atma (soul) is eternal. It does not die when the body dies — it simply transitions from one form to another, continuing its journey. This truth applies to every living being, not just humans. Lord Krishna says in the Gita that the same divine consciousness pervades all of creation — every human, every animal, every insect.
Hindu tradition has always recognised the spiritual significance of animals. Lord Shiva's Nandi, Lord Vishnu's Garuda, Lord Ganesha's Mushika, Goddess Durga's lion — the deities themselves chose animals as their divine vehicles, acknowledging the sacredness of animal life. The cow is worshipped as Gau Mata. The dog is associated with Bhairava, a form of Lord Shiva, and is considered the guardian of Kashi itself.
When a beloved pet passes away, the atma within it continues its journey. Performing Asthi Visarjan for the pet in the sacred Ganga at Kashi is a way of honouring that atma and helping it on its onward path, just as we do for our human family members.
The process of Asthi Visarjan for a pet follows the same steps as for human ashes, with one specific difference in the sankalp.
Sankalp: The ceremony begins with the sankalp, in which the priest formally invokes the name of the departed pet. Since animals do not have a family gotra, the priest chants "Amukh Gotra" during the sankalp, which is the Vedic form used when the gotra is not known or not applicable. The rest of the sankalp procedure remains exactly the same as for a human ceremony.
Asthi Pujan: The ashes of the pet are placed in a kalash (pot) decorated with flowers. The priest performs the asthi pujan at the ghat with offerings of flowers, Ganga jal, and other items, while reciting the prescribed mantras for the peace of the departed soul.
Boat Ride and Immersion: A private boat takes you to the middle of the river Ganga, where the ashes are immersed in the sacred waters while the priest recites the final mantras. The immersion is done at the deepest point of the river, exactly as it is done for human ashes.
Tarpan (in the ₹5,000 package): Water mixed with black sesame seeds is offered to the departed soul, completing the offering that is believed to nourish and satisfy the atma on its onward journey.
The complete ceremony takes approximately 1 hour, including the pujan at the ghat and the boat ride. The timing runs from 7 AM until sunset.
Pitradev offers 3 packages for pet Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi, identical in structure to the packages for human ashes. Each package is fixed and all-inclusive.
This package covers the Asthi Visarjan with the complete vidhi — the asthi pujan at the ghat, the boat ride to the middle of the river, and the immersion of the ashes in the Ganga. The priest charges, all ritual material, and the boat for 2 persons are included.
This is suited to families who wish to perform the visarjan with the correct rites in a simple and dignified manner.
In addition to everything in Package 1, this package includes a Pind Daan in which 3 rice balls (pinds) are made and offered for the peace of the departed pet's soul. This is preferred by families who wish to combine the visarjan with a pind offering on the same day.
This is the most comprehensive package, covering the Asthi Visarjan, the Pind Daan, and the Tarpan (water offering with sesame seeds). This package is ideal for families who wish to complete the full set of rites for their departed companion in a single visit.
In every package, the priest charges, all ritual material, and the boat for 2 persons are included. For each additional person beyond 2 who wishes to travel on the boat, a charge of ₹200 per person applies.
If you are unable to travel to Varanasi with your pet's ashes, Pitradev offers an online Asthi Visarjan service. You can send the ashes by courier or Speed Post to our address in Varanasi, and the complete ceremony is performed by our priest at the Ganga ghat on your behalf. Photographs and videos of the ceremony are shared with you after completion.
This service is especially valuable for families in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai, as well as NRI families abroad, who wish to give their pet a sacred farewell in the Ganga but cannot make the journey.
The ashes can be packed in a small container and sent by India Post Speed Post or private courier (DTDC, Blue Dart, Professional Couriers). Transit time is typically 3 to 5 working days, and the Asthi Visarjan is performed within 48 hours of the ashes reaching Varanasi.
Families choose Varanasi for their pet's Asthi Visarjan for the same reason they choose it for their human family members — the Ganga in Kashi is believed to carry the highest spiritual power for liberation. If the Ganga can grant moksha to a human soul, it can grant the same peace to an animal soul that shared your home, your love, and your life.
There is also a practical reason. Very few places in India offer a structured, priest-led Asthi Visarjan service specifically for pets. Most families who lose a pet are left with no guidance on what to do with the ashes. Some scatter them in a local park or river, but without the correct vidhi, the act remains incomplete in the spiritual sense. At Pitradev, the ceremony is performed with the same reverence, the same ghat, the same priest, and the same mantras as any other Asthi Visarjan — because the atma inside deserves no less.
For families who also wish to perform Asthi Visarjan for human family members at a different sacred site, Pitradev arranges the same service at Asthi Visarjan in Prayagraj at the Triveni Sangam.
You need to carry only 2 things:
The ashes of your pet in a container (a clay pot, a metal urn, or a plastic box are all acceptable).
A clean set of clothes for yourself — a white dhoti for gentlemen is traditional but not mandatory for pet Asthi Visarjan. Wear whatever you are comfortable in.
All puja samagri, flowers, and ritual materials are arranged by the priest. Nothing needs to be sourced or carried from home.
The same precautions apply as for any Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi. Pre-book the ceremony before you travel to avoid commission-driven referrals from auto drivers and hotel staff. Always wear a life jacket on the boat. If you are sending the ashes by courier, pack them securely in a leak-proof container and declare the contents as "religious article" at the post office or courier counter.
Losing a pet is a form of grief that society does not always acknowledge. There is no formal mourning period, no community gathering, no ritual framework that most families are aware of. Many pet owners grieve silently, feeling that their loss is "not serious enough" to warrant a ceremony.
It is serious enough. If your dog or cat was a member of your family — and you know whether it was — then honouring its departure with a sacred rite is not excessive. It is appropriate. The Ganga does not ask whether the atma it receives inhabited a human body or an animal body. It receives all souls equally, and it grants them the same peace.
For online Asthi Visarjan (sending ashes by courier), share the courier tracking number after dispatch, and the ceremony will be performed within 48 hours of the ashes reaching Varanasi.
Your pet gave you years of unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship. It deserves a farewell that honours the bond you shared. With Pitradev, Asthi Visarjan for pets in Varanasi is performed with the same sacred process, the same Ganga ghat, and the same reverence as for any human family member. Packages start at ₹2,000 with priest, material, and boat included. Because every atma — human or animal — deserves dignity in its final journey.
