About the origin of the name ‘Gaya’ as referred to in Vayu Purana is that Gaya was the name of a demon (Asura) whose body was pious after he performed rigid penance and secured blessings from Vishnu. It was said that the Gayasura’s body would continue to be known as Gaya Kshetra. The Pind Daan done at Gaya is also considered a personal way to make offerings on foot prints of Lord Vishnu, thus ensuring all departed souls of our ancestors rest in peace permanently.

The best time to do pinddaan in Gaya is during pitrupaksh but people comes in Gaya throughout the year for shradh and pindpradanam, Places of Pind daan in Gaya are – Vishnupad Temle, Phalguni river, Pretshila, brahmkund, Akshyavat and Ramkund. It takes three to four days’ time to complete the pinddaan at all these places. People who do not have much time can offer pinddaan at Vishnupad only as this is considered most important place of doing pind daan in Gaya. It is also said that one should not do Gaya shraadh for any person within one year of his/her demise. It should always be done at least after one year.
