Tarpanam / Hiranya Shradham is a Hindu ritual that is performed to pay respect to one's ancestors and offer them prayers for their well-being in the afterlife. It is a way of expressing gratitude towards one's ancestors and seeking their blessings.

In the Hindu tradition, it is believed that the soul of a departed person continues to exist after death and is reborn in a new body. However, the quality of the next life is believed to depend on the actions of the person in their previous life. Therefore, it is believed that performing Tarpanam / Hiranya Shradham can help appease the departed soul and help them attain a better next life.

Tarpanam / Hiranya Shradham is usually performed by the male descendants of the deceased, such as sons or grandsons. It involves offering food and water to the departed souls, along with reciting mantras and performing other rituals. The offerings are made in the form of small balls or "pinds" made of rice, sesame seeds, and other grains.

This ritual is usually performed in certain holy places such as Varanasi, Gaya, and Prayagraj, where it is believed that performing Tarpanam / Hiranya Shradham has greater spiritual significance. It is often performed during the Pitru Paksha, a 15-day period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to paying homage to one's ancestors.
