Another story associated with Varanasi is that of King Harishchandra. King Harishchandra was a righteous ruler who suffered many hardships and lost his kingdom due to his commitment to truth and integrity. He eventually ended up in Varanasi and lived in poverty, performing Pind Daan for his ancestors. It is believed that Lord Vishnu was pleased with his devotion and restored his kingdom and wealth.
Performing Pind Daan in Varanasi is believed to bring blessings and liberation for the departed soul. It is said that the city has the power to free the soul from the cycle of birth and death and help it attain moksha or salvation.
